First Cast

What happened? In Kioni's own words: "I looked for the kitty cat, kitty cat was not there. I fell, I cried, mommy held me."
That's basically what it was. We were out of town staying at Pastor Giles' home while visiting Freeport EFC last weekend. She got sick on Saturday night (see another entry). Sunday morning, I did not go to church but stayed in the Giles' with her. She loves Magee the cat and was chasing the cat around. I was in the shower, suddenly I heard a loud thump and then a bloody-murder cry. Kioni has fallen off the couch, I could tell this much. But normally she wouldn't cry this bad. She cried for about half an hour, but then she went to take a nap, woke up just fine. I am pretty sure that if she was not sick and lost sleep, she would not have fall that badly.
For the next few days, she did not complain about any pain, did not baby her arm, there was no bruising, no swelling, no redness. Tuesday night, we even took her to Mary Kay's (a friend at church) home to spend a few hours there while we went to interview with the missions board at Arlington Heights EFC. She played just fine, and was quite wired up when we picked her up. Absolutely NO sign of pain whatsoever.
Yesterday (Wednesday) Dan took her to gym class, after about 30 minutes and some cartwheel and donkey kick type of activities, Dan started seeing her babying her arm, at that time, Dan that she sprained her wrist. So they stopped and Miss Kelly, her gym teacher, gave her some ice to ice her wrist. She did not cry and when Dan asked her if it hurt, she said 'No'.
After dinner, she was rocking on Gidiup (the rocking horse), suddenly she let out another bloody-murder scream, it was her arm again, we knew for sure there was something wrong.
We took her in for an X-ray today, sure enough, it was obvious that she broke both of the bones on her right arm, and they are slightly angled.
Dr. Dugan said since the angle is less than 35 degree, he did not need to set it. He put the fibre glass cast on, with Kioni looking on with high interest. Kioni picked out the red cast, they have many different colors. Afterwards, BaaBaa got a 'cast' too, a blue one, on her right front leg.
The cast needs to be on for three weeks, will be taken off on May 4th. Dr. Dugan said since she is so young and the bones fuses so much at this age, if you take an X-ray six months from now, you can't even tell which arm has the broken bone before.
Kioni was playing in the doctor's office with her right hand (as seen in the last photo and the video below) right before the cast was put on, that shows what kind of kid she is. She kept banging on the toy with her right hand.
There was not a tear shed with her whole day ordeal while at two doctors' offices, at the X-ray room, while setting the cast, etc. A happy camper all along.
If there was no gym class, I think we will never find out she broke her bones, and the bones will just heal by themselves.
The doctor said she can keep going to gym class, since the cast is going to stop her from any activities that requires her arm anyway. Walking on balance beam and running around is not a problem.
What a kid! She just turned 2 years 3 months yesterday, and she has her first cast. Hopefully, there will not be any more in her life.

What a shocking news! Recently a few people I knew that have broken their body parts. Is this a season of accidents? A relative of mine in my hometown just broke his leg and will have an surgery on next Monday. Kioni is lucky that does not need an inner surgery. And she is such a brave girl that did not cry in the doctor's office. Hope she will get well soon.

Poor Kioni. Poor Momma! Logan hasn't broken anything yet, but he did knock out a tooth last summer. As for the doctor's story about healing - believe it! Kati broke her collarbone when she was born and there is absolutely no trace of the break on x-rays now!

I'm so sorry to hear about Kioni's broken arm! She is a very tough girl to have only cried a little bit during the whole ordeal. I'll pray for you both as she heals and you deal with her frustration with her cast.

I got that news yesterday from Annie. We viewed Kioni’s blog and saw the photos. We showed them to Dad and Mom. What a pity ! Irene and I thought that the fracture site was not near the wrist joint. So that full recovery is anticipated around 1.5 to 2 months. It is too surprised for me that in such a fracture, Kioni did not have any bruising, swelling or pain… That worth a record in the Guinness ! The most probable event happened was that she suffered from some kind of “greenstick” injury (not yet fractured) and exacerbated (probably due to torsion and traction) when she had her Gym lesson.

We are not that good in the last few “weeks”. Repeatedly, three out of four family members got sick. Ivan -> Josh - > Irene -> Ivan -> Josh -> continues to be Irene - > who’s the next ?

I fully understood that what nuclear scientist mean for “chain reaction”! Another chain reaction was Flu -> Flu -> Flu -> Otits media -> Flu -> post illness allergic rhinitis - > what can be next?

By the way, always check Kioni for her fingers and palm for

1) circulation (means color of her nails and nail beds,
2) sensation (any tingling or ‘funny’ sensation over her fingers or palm,
3) any trophic changes (changes in sweating, temperature, dry/scaly skin)
4) difficulty in fingers manipulation (we mean dexterity), just quickly use her thumb and touch her 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th fingers consecutively, compare with her left hand side and see any major differences.

Because sometimes, prolonged use of the cast might bring along some complications (most of the time the wrist will be swollen in the beginning and that might caused transient compression of the arteries and nerves). Most of the time, the wrist will be smaller as time goes by and the above condition might not happened.

Take care,
Sunny

Amy!
Kioni is sooooo beautiful--the perfect little face showing the perfect combination of your features and Dan's. All this, plus she's a good sport, too, able to do even cartwheels with a broken arm.
As we say in Greece, "Doxa to Theo!" (glory to God :)
